HSD: Adaptive Action - See, Understand, and Influence Organisations

Do you support self-organized Teams as Scrum Master, Coach, or Manager? Do you want to strengthen self-organization in your team or organization or simply understand it? Do you want to understand, how large organizations really work? Why traditional Change Management usually fails? And what you can try instead? Do you want to understand what self-organization is all about and support it rather than just letting it "somehow" happen?

In this training you will learn the fundamentals of Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) from one of its originators, Glenda Eoyang.

What is Human Systems Dynamics (HSD)?

In times of complex change, when you cannot predict or control the future, your best and only hope is to adapt.  Human systems dynamics brings a collection of models and methods that increase your capacity to adapt to rapid change in complex environments.  HSD is an emerging field at the intersection of complexity and social sciences.

Advantages of HSD

HSD helps individuals, organizations, and teams develop adaptive capacity by:

  • Focusing on adaptive action, not just theory and talk
  • Finding simple ways to think and talk about complexities of human systems
  • Applying to human systems the same principles that the Agile Manifesto brought to developing software systems
  • Providing a single theory and practice that works for individuals, partners, teams, and organizations
  • Helping you, your team, and your organization adapt at the speed of change
  • Following open source principles to make HSD models and methods available as widely as possible

Agenda

We will offer for the first time a two-day introduction to HSD entitled Adaptive Action:  See, Understand, and Influence Organizations.

Day 1:  Organizations as Complex Adaptive Systems

  • Three kinds of change in the 21st century
  • Sticky issues of change in organizations
  • Complex adaptive systems (CAS) and organizational change features, benefits, risks, and rewards
  • Working with others in complex systems
    • Adaptive action
    • Finite and infinite games
    • Four truths
    • Simple rules
    • Seeing and influencing patterns (Eoyang CDE Model)
  • Exercises include critical reflection on challenges of the past, work with case studies, and focus on sticky issues participants bring with them to the class

Day 2:  Models and Methods for Adaptive Capacity

  • Building a team (Difference Matrix)
  • Executing a plan (Change maturity model)
  • Innovating in product and process (Landscape Diagram)
  • Setting conditions for evolution (CDE Model)
  • Dealing with conflict (Conflict Circles)
  • Action planning for your own sticky issue
  • Exercises include practical applications of  each model and method as well as tips for embedding them in your work

After this session you will be able to...

... Recognize and resolve challenging relationships with clients

... See patterns in team interactions and take action to improve performance

... Understand complex business cases and see innovative options for action

... Know when you’re stuck and find ways to move forward

... Balance stability and change to find a “fix that fits”

Praise

I only wanted to know, what was new in the field of complex systems, when I followed Diana Larsens recommendation and visited Glenda's "Human Systems Dynamics Practitioneer" class. These two weeks completely changed my thinking about organizations and my work at it-agile, since for the first time it provided a bridge to connect my knowledge about Complex Adaptive Systems and my day-to-day management and consulting work. Today HSD is an important pillar of our internal self-organization as well as in my client work.
